Biden administration ‘spared no effort’ to persuade India on U.N. vote condemning Russia: U.S. diplomat Donald Lu
Biden’s government attracted all stops to persuade India to choose with 141 other countries that condemned Russia for attacking Ukraine, said M.S. Donald Lu’s diplomat.
Lu spoke to members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday, right after India Abstain from voting at the resolution of the General Assembly U.N.
“We did not voice not trying to convince India to vote in the UN session but also to show support for Ukraine at this critical moment. The efforts were led by the Blinken Secretary,” Lu, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, told The committee, which holds hearing against US-Indian relations, led by its chair (Democrat), Chris Murphy, and a member of the rank (Republic) Todd Young.
The thought of the Indian government is that he wants to allow the possibility of diplomatic solutions and worry about the welfare of 18,000 students in Ukraine and work with both parties to ensure their safety, Lu said.
Senator Chris van Hollen (Democrat, Maryland) said the concern for the lives of students was more and more reasons to condemn Russian aggression.
At one point Mr. Young said that India tried to remain outside the winner in the Russian-Ukrainian situation (supported by the West).
“I think they are trying to choose the victory side. That might be a little some worries … in their government, and we need to show our determination and unity so they understand that we will not leave,” he said.
“We will stand with Ukrainian people and make life vladimir putin in the coming years.”
Some senators expressed disappointment or confusion with India’s voice.
Jeanne Shaheen, a new Democrat Hampshire said he was aware of a weapon connection but did not think “which also includes values”.
“The biggest democracy in India. So I hope that India will side with world democracy that supports Ukraine,” he said.
Lu repeatedly asked whether India would be approved for his purchase from the Triumf S-400 defense system from Russia. United America’s strength which hopes US through the Sanctions Law (Caatsa) mandates sanctions for those who buy weapons from Russia, except except for certain exceptions apply, allowing the president to override the sanctions.
Lu said the question was still considered and he did not want to prejudice President Joe Biden’s decision or State Secretary Tony Blinken on whether there would be sanctions or neglect and whether Russia attacked Ukraine would have that decision.
“What can I say is that India is a very important security partner of us now and that we appreciate the advance of the partnership,” he said.
“I hope part of what happens with extreme criticism that Russia is present, is that India will find it is time for remotely.”
Officials A.S. Also on the phone with Pakistani diplomats and Sri Lanka on the night of the voice (Tuesday), trying to convince them to support the resolution, according to Mr. Lu. The two countries were abstained from voting. Lu said that the government “tried to find a way to involve specifically” with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan after his recent visit to Moscow.
Pay for not only the high-end Russian system like the S-400, but also ammunition and spare parts, it will be difficult in the coming years, Lu said, referring to international banking sanctions on Moscow after his attack on Ukraine. He responded to questions from Mr. Young about how the Biden government increased weapons sales from the US and allies to India.
“I would think if I am a current consumer from Russian technology, I want to make sure that I have a diversity because we will see problems for Russian customers in securing reliable supplies,” he said.
