Scientists Discover 4,000-Feet Coral Reef In Australian Desert: Report

Remains -the coral reefs of millions of years have been found in the middle of the Australian desert. Reefs have been found in the Nullarbor’s plain in South Australia, which has now been converted into a 76,000 square mile desert with limestone, a report in Newsweek said. However, during the Cenozoikum era, about 14 million years ago, reefs were believed to be submerged under the tropical sea.
Scientists from Curtin University’s School of Earth and Planet Science in Perth have identified this coral reef as a form of bull eyes in fresh satellite photos and high resolution, the outlet said further.

This discovery has challenged their previous beliefs that the Nullarbor plain never has features. Milo Barham, a colleague of the writer and geologist from Curtin University quoted said by Newsweek, “Unlike many parts of the world, the large area of the nullarbor’s plains is mostly unchanged by the weathering process and erosion for millions of years, making it a unique geological canvas recording ancient history by means of outstanding. “

“Through the high resolution satellite imagery and field work, we have identified clear remnants of the structure of the original sea bed preserved for millions of years, which is the first of the type of land found in the Nullarbor plain,” Braham added.

According to Newsweek, 18% Australia is considered a desert, making it mostly dry in contemporary times. However, Australia is surrounded by oceans and rain forests for hundreds of millions of years, including the oceans that have soaked the nullarbor’s plains.

According to a study published in the journal Earth Surface Processs and Landforms, the structure of coral reefs includes lifted rims and the shape of the central dome. This structure has a diameter of 3,950 to 4,250 feet.

This structure is also different from other plain land forms and cannot be explained by any local geological process, according to research, newsweek further said.
